Academy Member Makes Her Mark in St. Albert
The St.Albert Gazette
St. Albert midget AAA Slash left their mark in Sunday's regular season opener exactly like last year with a 2-1 win over the Red Deer Chiefs. The only difference was this victory was on home ice with an older core, except for the young girl who scored the winning goal.
Karly Heffernan, just 13 years old, should be playing her first year of bantam this year. But standing at fivefoot- five and 123 pounds, Heffernan doesn't feel out of place with the midget squad. She certainly looked like she belonged while charging down the right wing and cutting in to snipe a shot past netminder Camille Trautman seven minutes into the third period.
"It's really nice to come out with the first win," said Heffernan, who played last year with the Strathcona peewee AA boys. "I feel really proud but I have to keep pushing. It doesn't matter how old I am. I think I'm pretty average right now but I'm keeping the pace up."
"The play developed with Karly and she had a chance to shoot and she made a great shot," added head coach Terry Sydor. "She's very creative, an excellent offensive talent."
St. Albert opened the scoring five minutes into the first period as Melissa Kueber capitalized on a scrambled play in front of the Chiefs' net with a forehand chip.
